Embed the website version (git tag and/or commit) in the footer or even HTML comment

It would be helpful to be able to know what version of the website is currently deployed, and perhaps when it was built. It will likely help with debugging in the future (e.g. "Have we already fixed that bug or not").

I think it would work well next to:

© 2010-2017 F-Droid Limited and Contributors

in the footer. But if that is to obnoxious for some, then even as a HTML comment:

Yeah, I think it should be like "v0.1 C 2010-2017 F-Droid Limited and Contributors"

Here's the basic code needed to do this, I didn't know how to plug this into Jekyll in the right way:
