Crash when resuming main activity

Reported by several users via ACRA:

I'm adding this here so that if someone else looks through ACRA reports they can see that it has already been addressed in this commit. It was more of a coincidence that it was fixed, because we no longer query the database to get the number to overlay on top of the "Updates" tab.
