Service Desk incoming email address not allowed as a member of gmail for domains

Description of the problem

I have created a new project with "Service Desk" enabled. This produced a email address similar to this incoming+GROUP_NAME/PROJECT_NAME@gitlab.com. I them trying to add this email address as a member of the "support" group in google groups so that when someone emails support@example.com it automatically gets forwarded to the "Service Desk" email address.

I get the following error in google groups

"incoming+GROUP_NAME/PROJECT_NAME@gitlab.com" at position 1 invalid: These characters are not allowed: +, /

Because the incoming email address for the service desk has a + and a / I can not add it to google groups and I can not use it for my support@example.com email address. Thus Gitlab "Service Desk" is not compatible with google apps for domains. This looks to be a limitation of google groups, but makes this new exciting feature useless to me. :(

Why is this closed without an answer of some kind from anyone?

I have this exact same issue and it is with Nexcess - not G Suite. This is a validation issue on the email hosts side of things, but that does not excuse GitLab from addressing this issue as it seems like a pretty big one to me.
