Tracking all things design for our Swag Shop — site design, decals, t-shirts, etc. Awaiting final timeline from Canary but we should be set to launch the week of February 8th.
It'd be awesome if we could pick some of our more critical libraries/dependencies and either round-robin them some or all of the profits as donations, or let the buyers pick which libraries to fund, similar to Humble Bundle:
Perhaps we can move this discussion about swag to the design project? Since it's not going to lead to changes on www, but instead it will generate discussion around design artifacts and assets.
tl;dr - This is a cost center and we will likely lose money on this great venture. At least for the conceivable future. I'd like to revisit this idea of donating the profits towards open source contributors after we have a better understanding of our costs and if we do make a profit!
Sounds like we like the idea of fundraising through making products so much. So much so that we want to build an entire sponsorship campaign to fund open source contribution!
There's an entire system set up to do this https://gratipay.com/ (Actually used to be called Gittip) If we want to get involved in sponsoring individuals, might be worth following trodden ground.
Re: giving away any profits from the shop. At this point we don't have any idea about the costs of the shop itself. We have to pay for warehousing and fulfillment, so our operating costs are probably higher than examples we're looking at which use Shopify, and warehouse at their own HQ facilities, pack themselves, etc. We are also pricing the items lower than the normal market rate. So if you see the same quality shirt for $25 elsewhere, we will have it for $20. And we'll be offering incentives and discounts and freebies... So! It's unlikely there will be profits to donate.
@jschatz1 I can create one, usually the favicon is a .ico file, so I was curious if you had that file on the gitlab.com side. We would use the same one for the swag shop.
@lukebabb Ashley wants the swag shop added to the community page, but it seems we will need an icon for that. Can you please add that to your ever growing design list :) https://about.gitlab.com/community/@nearlythere
