The project explore page contains a drop-down with tags: https://gitlab.com/explore/projects

On your own instance that contains > 3430 lines and the page loads in > 13s for me.

I'd suggest replacing that drop-down with a combined search & dropdown box... Dropdown pre-filled with most frequently used tags, limited to the top 20 and search above.

To clarify: these are project tags, not Git tags. I agree with the idea of only displaying the most commonly used ones with a limit, displaying all of them is just crazy.

The query for this would be something along the lines of:

SELECT name
FROM tags
ORDER BY taggings_counts DESC
LIMIT 20

This would require an index on tags.taggings_count.

@dzaporozhets Are there any objections against only showing the top 10-20?

@yorickpeterse I think we just use dropdown with search and load only 20 items max via ajax? Same like we do for users dropdown
