Search via text input on any page other than /search doesn't search

GitLab 8.11.0 - When I begin typing anything into the search box, typeahead suggests some available searches, but If I type my own value in the search box, then nothing happens when I press enter.

If I shrink the page so that the search text box disappears, then when I click on the search magnifying glass, the search page opens and an actual search does take place when I press enter.

Reproduced on: Chrome Version 52.0.2743.116 (64-bit) Firefox Version 47.0.1
