Hooks being called many times

I'm duplicating the issue from https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlabhq/issues/3794#issuecomment-124556798

I have a simple hook using r10k_gitlab_webhook project. When I issue a push to a repo, the expected behavior is for the hook to be called once, and to trigger Puppet's R10k to sync the repository from gitlab. This action triggers up to 10 times at random intervales since the initial commitment. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this to stop this inconvenient but not super critical behavior?

It looks to me that the Web hooks are executing once per commit, but that they are failing due to Net::ReadTimeout. Is the URL for the Web hook timing out for some reason? Perhaps your Web hook handler isn't returning a response in a timely fashion?

The webhook service will return response after completion of r10k execution. It may take from one to two minutes.

The default Web hook timeout is 10 seconds. You can increase this in the configuration (e.g. in the omnibus version, change gitlab-rails['webhook_timeout'] = 10).

It's probably a better practice to change your Webhook to return 200 as soon as the message is successfully received, unless you really want the hook to retry upon some failure in the execution.

Thanks for your suggestion. I've changed my webhook to return 200 right after the message is successfully received and that solved the problem.
