Tooltip on top center tanuki gitlab logo telling version info

Today I was wondering about the version this gitlab instance was on. It could be found in the help section.

This is nice to get to know it like this for around the end/beginning of a release.

However what about having a tooltip on the gitlab tanuki icon in the top center… Thinking this ahead in terms if we ever get to be able to personally switch to a different version.. say gitlab.com will act as the latest dev version on your profile.

Currently it only acts as a loader.. this would give it an additional purpose.

Say we'd follow the Chrome example with "stable", "development/beta" , "canary/alpha"

Would it be weird if customers uploaded their own logo and it did that (displayed a tooltip)?

Personally I dislike the this idea, I don't think most people care about the version number and this would be too prominent for such niche information.

@connorshea yes this passed my thoughts as well.. still got to get this idea out there ;)

@ClemMakesApps good point! .. mmh in that case.. perhaps only for gitlab.com.. not personal gitlab instances ... or only if we get the option to select versions yourself.. featureflags etc (see which feature flags are active)

Maybe we can put this information to the left sidebar somewhere at the bottom?

We could introduce a similar "help" menu here:

not sure though.. in that sense we'd be messing again with left sidebar nav.. which we should wait with for a little while.

What is the main goal? Is it to get current GitLab version quickly? Or is it something else?

@blackst0ne yes, know which version you are exactly running.. perhaps even show a link to last changes/blogpost or changelog.. but mainly just version number.

@dimitrieh I see no value in providing this to the user in every screen. I do hope to bring a "What's new" thing to GitLab in the future, which would give you the same and more information. Maybe look into that :)
