Yes, please remove the circle mask (actually rounded corners).
Squeezing the logo into the available space was a very awkward and time-consuming process for me, I'm not too fluent with Gimp etc. so I had to retry and re-upload until things looked roughly okay. If I were into rounded corners, I'd have found it far easier to select exactly the size of corner radius that would fit my selected icon image, and apply that!
Was Meirion's logo autogenerated on GitLab? In that case, the masking shouldn't be applied to whatever path generates this kind of logo; it's cropped at the corners.
Maybe it's better/easier to apply the mask in the GitLab autogeneration instead of via CSS styling. That way, whoever applies the mask will know where to check whether anything important could ever go into the corners.

Closing this issue in favor of https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/20128. Although it keeps circular masking (since its something we want by design) but at least it gives better visual feedback on it
