UX Polish feedback
I followed up with Chris from Codepen to understand some of the reasons he made the comment about UX polish. Here is some feedback:
Real-time
That spinner makes it seem like "I'll just wait until it's done checking, and something will happen" .
But it never changes, you gotta refresh the page to see.
In the transition from GitHub and Trello, stuff like that seems more real-time-y. Like comments appearing as they happen and such.
Line length
I feel like line length is a pretty long as well, kinda generally.

@hazelyang @tauriedavis @jschatz1 - We should implement the rest of the pages from this line length meta issue [https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/13680] The UX work is ready to go (and should be simpler than the issues page) for these other pages. @jschatz1 Any chance you have someone with some spare time??
@awhildy this reminds me of https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/20084 which is an issue for a better custom loading spinner...
Thinking on this issue, we can perhaps do a better job by trying to improve gitlab in the following way:
- create updated loading spinner
- only use in places where we changed to new techniques like VUE, to reinforce the thought that if something is not instantaneous and thus still needs a little loading, the page actually is real time or "more real-time-y"
results:
- reinforced meaning of real real-time-y
- we can more easily see which places need additional updating to real time
- better looks
Someone mentioned this the other day, although I don't remember if it was in an issue or in Slack, but a great idea that I would like to see happen is using skeleton screens to indicate loading. I think they're way better than spinners because they give you an idea of what is about to happen and they make the page loading feel faster

@dimitrieh - Definitely agreed that we can do better than the current spinner. However, I don't think we should introduce inconsistencies with 2 different spinners. While I get the goal you are suggesting, I think it will be too subtle for most people to notice it as intentional, and will instead look like a bug.
@cperessini - Definitely interesting! The challenge we have is that the length of our various elements are dynamic based on the content, so I'm not sure we can do as smooth as a transition of content in. But we might be able to do something as some elements don't change (header, sidebar, etc.)
