Character diff highlighting fails with consecutive changed lines

If you check this commit you can see the patern.

The first two changed lines, which are not consecutive, properly highlight what characters have changed. However lines 12-14 fail to do so.

This is made much easier by !2109 (merged). Once that is in, I will have a look.
