Why do you even need a prefix for a commit SHA? if it was just styled in a particular way, wouldn't that work too?

I would really encourage reading https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/27508, as there aren't a lot of characters available. For instance, ^foo is already superscript in Markdown, so we can't use that.

Previously someone suggested | for pipelines, which I like because it's the pipe character, but I can't find that.

Finally, group milestone links aren't impossible, but are a little tricky. Note that we don't actually support links to labels at all - to reference a label, you have to use ~, as labels don't really have a 'canonical' link - and every other link that we collapse is tied to a project.

@victorwu Why do we need a prefix for SHAs? Prefixes are useful when it's ambiguous if something is meant to be a regular word or a reference (like @DouweM vs DouweM), but in the case of commit SHAs that's not the case since they have a very specific format (7-40 alphanumerical characters).

@victorwu no need for a prefix for SHA is preferable. Doesn't require additional work besides pasting.
