mark activity as read

The activity feed keeps growing, and after some time, I can't easily see whether there has been new activity since last glance.

Would be nice to be able to mark it as read, and have the activity until that point greyed out. Any newer activity after that point can be highlighted.

Will have to give this one quite a big think. We see activity as fairly ephemeral and as such don't treat it as read or unread.

We're going to look to do quite a serious overhaul of our integrations and improve a lot of that functionality in the first half of next year and will take this into account.

Speaking as an outsider, wouldn't this be simple to implement:

1. On the server maintain a timestamp when user clicked marked as read
2. On the client side, anything older than that timestamp, show it in grey.

Im with @mydigitalself on this one. If you are part of several active repos, then you would have to keep on marking items as read.

This requires more thought.

@trevorah I don't think what @hrj is suggesting is as attentive as the chat message read/unread green badges, but rather a more subtly treatment on an activity item that you've seen vs not seen and not necessarily have a badge/count.

Ah, just re-read, I would very much want to avoid having a mark as read for activity items. This would require constant attention from people in order to make it go away. But I think we can do something more subtle than this that wouldn't require too much effort on behalf of the user.

Wait, I don't mean to suggest there should be a prominent notification or such.

Basically the same UI, but with a subtle button that the user can (optionally) click to grey out older activity.
