The feature to call someone’s attention to a discussion by @ mentioning them is great, but it could be even greater if the target person would get an audible notification; for some browsers or screen setups the popup notification can too easily be missed or suppressed accidentally (Opera). It should be configurable to only have the sound when mentioned while visual notifications are also emitted for every message in a channel.

Hmm, I’m curious about the reasoning: isn’t the app just a bundled web client? I usually prefer browser tabs over having dozens of separate applications running and all other chat clients support audible notifications. I’d hate having to add an IRC bridge just for this ;-)
+1 on this.... i'm finding myself more and more in Gitter and less and less in GChat. Having a sound alert on messages.... especially on @ references is critical!
Thanks gitter team, your product rocks and I have really enjoyed using it. Thanks for being so open, and doing all the hard work.
I'd also like to chime in and say why I would love this feature added:
I usually have a ton of tabs open, or am in a different app (like my code editor) so I can't see that there is a new chat visually.
Like others, I dislike having to have an installed native app because it is an extra app I have to cycle through while coding.
I also dislike having to install native apps anyways - just the general privacy/trust issues and disk clutter, etc.
An audio chime in the web app would be a huge UX improvement for me personally as well as many others.
I can totally see why you guys don't want to add audio to a web app though.
Lots of people get annoyed when random noises come from web apps.
However, I think that can be solved with the following:
By default, there is no noise. This keeps user trust/confidence.
By going to "Room Settings -> Notifications" I'd be presented with a new additional "sound" section.
Option A) No web sound notification.
Option B) Sound notification when I'm mentioned.
Option C) Sound notification on every new message.
Option C is still very important for me. I run all of our support/help for our Open Source project out of gitter (thanks so much!). I want to be focused entirely on coding (getting the next release out), until somebody needs help. In which case I want to hear an audible ding/chime so I know to switch over to the browser and go to gitter.
If I don't have a audible sound notification I wind up having to manually switch back to the browser every once in a while to check to see if there are any new messages. This is obviously very distracting from getting work done. Which is why I'd be indebted if you guys could add an opt-in option for sound notification for new messages.
@amark We want to add a notification sound to the web app along with the many improvements people have suggested from issues on this repo. We just haven't had a chance to tackle it which involves a decision on the default, a new persisted setting, picking out an amazing sound, and probably adjusting the desktop apps to use the new setting instead of handling it there.
@MadLittleMods totally understand! You guys are backlogged by tons of people requesting features and fewer submitting pull requests. I get it. Thanks for the acknowledgement, and I look forward to seeing those improvements at sometime in the future! Thanks again for such a great tool.
