I would like to see which rooms are private in my rooms list on the left hand side next to the room names. I don't see why I have to click on the room to know its private.

@mydigitalself how would it clutter the UI with a tiny mini lock 🔒 icon? Not everything must have a functional benefit. Some things are pleasing to see and experience. They can't be explained but they add a subtle of something which makes the experience awesome!
The addition of any element increases the visual density of the object. Aesthetics and delight are indeed truly important aspects of design, but you shouldn't frivolously add elements on the basis that "not everything must have a functional benefit". In fact considering the functional benefit is not only important for each and every decision, but broader than that, it creates a framework by which you can make decisions at all. Otherwise anyone can justify adding anything by that statement.
One of the masters of design, Dieter Rams, put it beautifully in his 10 principles of good design, in fact the last and possibly most poignant principle:
Good Design Is as Little Design as Possible : Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.
@mydigitalself I can't agree more but this is such a small and subtle feature. So you can beta test and see people's reactions. If people like it, then keep it. Otherwise, remove it. Simple.
