In the Diff / Compare view, submodule commits are basically skipped and you can barely detect them before accepting a merge request. An update to submodule will just show the path of the submodule in a grey box in the file list. Not detailing the ref changes at all. #1029 is related

I can confirm this issue present on 5.2.1. No submodule information present in the merge requests or diff view (although the summary shows modifications). For example, in a commit that only updates the submodule, it shows: "This commit has 1 additions and 1 deletions" and "Showing 0 changed files".

I can confirm that 7.6 included changes that now show the submodule commit sha. Sorry, I don't have a commit ref to link. I'm closing this issue for now. Please reopen if you find this doesn't address your issue.
