I think this would be best implemented as (hidden) user and global repositories. This would enable diffs between changes to snippets/"gists" and theres no need for an "extra" storage system.
backing up database+repos would be sufficient.

One of the most important things in my opinion. Public and Private Account driven Snippets. Maybe divided into language and/or technology (web, mobile, desktop, ...).
Snippets shouldnt be under Profile, there should be a global link like on Github on the top bar.
Im new to github and only C# programmer, but how could i help to realize this feature?
I would also be interested into making a Windows client like the github one.
