Updating GitLab Mattermost to v2.0.0 GitLab 8.5 release
Hi @marin,
Opening a ticket to discuss the upcoming Mattermost v2.0.0 release scheduled for Feb 16.
Mattermost version number is incrementing from "1.x" to "2.x" due to localization support that's been added and changes to the upgrade process.
Because of how omnibus appears to be set up (replacing only the Mattermost platform
executable file each release, versus replacing the folder from the contents of mattermost.tar.gz
), there are a couple of extra changes needed this release:
-
There are new
/i18n
and/web/static/i18n
directories on the server where Mattermost is deployed that will contain files for translating Mattermost into different languages (server and client respectively).- This means we need your help this release to add automation to create the folders add the localization files (right now only
en.json
for English andes.json
for Spanish)
- This means we need your help this release to add automation to create the folders add the localization files (right now only

Each update of GitLab Mattermost in future will require updating the contents of the folders with updated string files, and occasionally adding new files representing new languages (and we'll let you know when this happens).
We realize for GitLab, and the other community installers supporting Mattermost, this change may require a bit of extra work. The initial response to localization among the Mattermost community has been highly positive (94% of the global population do not speak English as a native language) and we hope providing high quality translations for GitLab Mattermost will be well received.
