Provide priority mechanism for color highlighting

I have completely abused the notion of highlighting bits of text in my shell and can't get enough of it.
It's seriously gaudy, but I find it an amazing help in picking out information from screens full of text.
If I create many color highlight regexps, there is some overlap between expressions. Currently there is no mechanism to provide a priority for the order in which they are evaluated. This causes some non-optimal highlighting as wider expressions can eclipse or shadow narrower ones.
While I'm at it, some more colors would be nice too. My preference would be to have a custom color fg/bg creator, then use those in the highlight text color selection.
Lastly, adding too many makes the terminal slow (you don't say...) but it would be nice if these could be optimized in some manner.
All in all, it's a kick ass feature, but not quite perfect, yet.
