Blank window when opening a new window/tab

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- keep iTerm 2 idle for a while, running but all tabs closed
- open a new window or tab
- you get a blank window with no terminal
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected - terminal window
A black screen is shown.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

The behaviour is very erratic, and cannot be reproduced each time.
