Incorrect rendering of Swedish ö character

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Create a directory named 'Göteborg'
- ls
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Note two problems: a) the umlaut is not properly aligned over the o, and b) a space is displayed between the ö and t characters. The umlaut should be aligned over the o just as it is when the directory is created, and there should be no space in the word.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Mac OS X 10.6.5, iTerm r391, built from source, Deployment build
