Periodically ping tmux server [was: Reconnect running/open tmux sessions]

I often have tmux session open and move between networks, close the laptop, etc. When I do that, the tmux session in iTerm 2 turns unresponsive, presumably because it lost the connection and doesn't know how to reconnect.

It'd be very nice if iTerm 2 could somehow monitor and restart the SSH connection as needed.

This is using iTerm 2 Build 2.1, on Mac OS X 10.10.3 (14D136). com.googlecode.iterm2.plist

Not sure how to do this without also implementing an ssh client. I'm sure there's some way to make OpenSSH fail faster when the network dies, but I don't know what it is.

Assuming you're talking about tmux integration, we could send pings periodically. Maybe that would make the remote send a RST and ssh could then die. Worth trying…

I've been experimenting with autossh, e.g.:

autossh -M 0 my-node.blah -X -t 'tmux -CC new-session -AD -s zesession'

Together with this SSH config:

# Kill connection if hanging
ServerAliveInterval 60
ServerAliveCountMax 3

That works OK-ish, it automatically reconnects when your connection is down. But it recreates the window from scratch every time it reconnects, which is a bit disruptive. This would probably not be too bad if iterm2 would remember the window position/layout.

Periodic pinging doesn't seem to work. Sometimes it hangs for a long time and then comes back to life.

I think I need to remember:

• Window size
• Is fullscreen/not fullscreen

Anything else important I'm missing?
