backspace causes a line jump

I am ssh through a box to another box (alu 7790 roputer) that gets the terminal width from the session. Once I connect, I make my terminal wider, if I then send a command that is wider (think default is 80 col) then what is set by the session and hit enter to run the command, then paste the command again, backspace to edit it, when I hit 80 colu the cursor jumps up a line. I can use the up arrow to show the last command and if I keep hitting it I keep jumping up a line. Screen shot attached

Most likely you have unescaped non-printing characters in your prompt. If you're using bash, you must surround them with \[ and \]. What is your $PS1?

I believe it is the default.

It looks like you're doing everything right but the machine (or networking equipment?) you're sshing into is acting badly. It might assume an 80 column display? Do you have the same issue with Terminal or xterm?
