U+034f COMBINING GRAPHEME JOINER renders incorrectly

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Output a U+034f (eg stick it in a textfile with a hexeditor and 'cat')

or:

  1. Select 'unicode hex input' input method
  2. hold option & type 034f

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The expected output is exactly nothing- this character has no visible glyph (not even a blank space- it's supposed to have zero width)
Instead, the character uses up a column in the terminal. (ie, looks like a space character)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Iterm2 Build 0.20.20101130
OS X 10.6.3
