[feature] Singular titlebar like in hyper terminal

Hi!

I have just started using iterm2. Before I used hyper terminal and before that I used the stock terminal which comes with mac.

I wonder if it is possible to integrate a feature to iterm which I really like in hyper terminal: the title bar is styled to be a singular element with the body of the program: same background, no borders, etc (see screenshot below).

I would love to see this feature in iterm2. So far I have only found the option to hide the title bar completely, but that removes the ability to drag the window and to maximize or minimize it.

In my opinion, this styling is great for distraction-free experience and I would like to know 1) if it is at all possible to do this, and 2) whether I can help in any way to bring this feature.

You can get pretty close with a couple of settings:

1. Set the tab color to black in Prefs > Profiles > Colors > Tab color
2. Select the dark theme in Prefs > Appearance
3. If you use the nightly build (https://iterm2.com/nightly/latest) turn off Prefs > Appearance > Show line under title bar when the tab bar is not visible.

Will it ever be possible to make the title bar automatically match the background color of the terminal? Even if the background color has transparency or blurring effects?

My ideal terminal would be super minimal like the hyper screenshot above, but I understand there are all different types of users.

Here's a rough draft of a very minimal terminal window - I know it's missing panes but besides that, what would need to be added for parity with iTerm2's many features?

It would support the following options:

• window
  • background (color / image)
  • title text (color, font, style)
  • window title (on|off)
• tab (with option to have different settings for active, inactive tabs)
  • background (color / image)
  • border (color, width)
  • text (color, font, style)
• shell
  • background (color / image)

Interesting idea of putting the window title to the left of the tabs. I thought it might just go away entirely in this kind of design.

At any rate, there are two approaches to do this:

1. Implement our own stoplight buttons and use a borderless window. This window style is deprecated and lacks rounded corners and a shadow. However, it does not use layers.

2. Use a window whose options specify no titlebar. We get the stoplight buttons for free, rounded corners, and a window shadow. But, it uses layers.

Layers suck because you cannot have transparency. You'd be limited to the handful of blur settings that Apple provides.

Hyper chooses option 2, which is the only reasonable choice, but losing transparency is painful—a lot of people like this feature.

The only way this could be done that I can think of is to add a preference for "fancy" windows (or whatever we call it). When fancy windows are enabled for a profile, the transparency slider becomes a select list offering: no blur, light, and dark. The blur slider would be disabled.

I haven't done this yet because I kind of hate the corner I'm in. Also it is a lot of work for something that might not be so great.

I think I threw the title in that wireframe just because I thought it might contain some critical info not available anywhere else. It could certainly go away, or there could be an option to display it.

You're right, that's pretty paltry compared to what iterm2 can do right now. I personally just like the general effect and keep the transparency/blur fairly low, so the layer option would suit me, but I understand that other users are probably using the full range of background options for all sorts of different purposes that layers wouldn't be able to accommodate.

High Sierra throws a wrench in the ointment because the standard title bar now has a bottom divider you can't get rid of :(.
