Tmux session lost after macOS restart

Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:

1. tmux -CC
2. esc to detach session
3. restart computer
4. open iterm
5. tmux -CC attach

What happened: tmux failed with error: “no sessions”

What should have happened: tmux should open with my previous session

After looking around a bit more it looks like this is a tmux limitation and not iterm.

One can use tmux-resurrect and/or tmux-continuum to solve this.

I'm reopening this because these plugins don't actually work in iterm, I should've tested before posting. They do work if I attach to the session in regular tmux. By work I mean that continuum places a resurrect file in .tmux/resurrect/ after 15 mins.
