404 when adding user to a project

My setup runs well on a subdir: http://mydomain:81/gitlab/ All so far so good except that I can't add a user to a project. Opening google chrome developer tools, I see a 404 accessing the API when typing a username to add.

The opposite path, adding a project to a user works well. Also, adding a user to a team works well.

Probably has to do something with relative_url_root. Guess going through this comment or this issue might help to find the actual bug.
