    In /project/commits, special characters in commiters' names are escaped like this: [ GDR! ] 3 months ago

    The name was GDR! in this case.

        output format is

        [ COMMITER_NAME ] COMMIT_DATE

        Sorry. I just found out that git log does the same. Closing.

        (also for some reason github didn't display the backslash before exclamation mark, which was the problem)
