Enable "auto fetch updates" for new users, encourage old users to enable it.

Now that the workflow for notifying about updates is much improved with the new UI, we should actively encourage people to enable the feature.

The default value for "Automatically fetch updates" should be switched to true for new installs of F-Droid.

It would be relatively trivial to add a banner at the bottom of the Updates screen when the user doesn't have this feature enabled. Something to the effect of "All updates must be downloaded manually. Would you like to enable automatic downloading of updates?".

It may also be of use to display a subtle message at the bottom if they do have this preference enabled. This may say something like "Updates will be downloaded automatically".

I would be careful with automatically downloading stuff in the background over mobile networks by default. I know people who have only 100 MB per month and would be pretty annoyed by apps doing that. Auto fetch updates over WiFi sounds safe.

Yup, so we already support the notion of "Only download over WiFi" (which incidentally is causing trouble for Replicant users - #816). So if we have an easily accesible "Enable auto download", we should probably default to "Only on WiFi" too.

But it should be kept optional. My wifi bandwith is small, too (bad internet connection) and I would not like if any connected android would download the files. I use the "nearby" feature to deploy the updates...

I think if we make it as clear as possible that it is enabled (e.g. with a message along the lines of "Updates are fetched automatically when on WiFi - touch to disable") at the bottom of the "Updates" tab then there will be a net benefit to enabling by default (on WiFi). Then users like yourself should be able to quickly identify that you'd like to disable that feature.
