Improvements to update workflow

This fixes a couple of issues. One of them is a bug (#922 (closed)).

The other is a usability issue identified in the user tests (the weird "tick" that shows up in the app list when download is complete). It doesn't completely fix this usability issue, because there is still two places where the downloading progress is shown on the one screen (at the top of the "Updates" screen, and also down the bottom below the "Show apps" item. However it does make it crystal clear what the intention is once the install is complete, by providing the option to run the app.
