WIP: Fix crosswords build (see #453)
Seeing how "Whatever you were doing before should still work" I made this merge request in the hope it'll made the newer versions build. I'm not sure if this merge request will trigger a real build (I expect it not to) but it will hopefully at least be an useful thing to do to help the discussion in #453 (closed) move forward.
