Explicitly state GitLab versions in comparison pages
Description
Based on https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/www-gitlab-com/issues/1473 and the chat discussions there is confusion in the comparison pages. Namely:
to make it easier to read --- I propose each version of GitLab to be consistently named. Right now there is “GitLab self-hosted”, “GitLab EE”, “GitLab CE”.
if you look through the drop down, there is no consistency with the naming conventions. Also, some of the comparisons show the Tanuki with a version listed over it, and others do not (how are prospects supposed to know what is what?). It is just all around confusing.
Proposal
Be explicit about the GitLab versions.
QnA
Questions:
- What GitLab versions should we compare to? We have 6 versions already! GitLab self-hosted (3) and GitLab.com (4). Soon we'll have another 2 (Ultimate self-hosted and platinum(?) on .com).
- Should we remove the self-hosted comparisons? Right now they compare to GitHub.com and SaaS.
Answers:
- Self-hosted should imply EEP
- Always compare with the version that is most feature complete (EEP)
- The left product should either be GitLab.com Silver or GitLab EEP
Action items
-
Replace self-hosted with EEP -
Create new pages and redirect the old ones -
Update naming where necessary
