misleading "You'll need to use different branch names to get a valid comparison. "
Sometimes we compare a commit hash with a branch name, like .../compare/41792ce...master
. This is because we store the commit hash in the build and dynamically create URLs to list changes in GitLab.
When the specified "from" commit hash matches the specified "to" branch name HEAD, then GitLab simply says:
You'll need to use different branch names to get a valid comparison.
...which in the past caused some confusion since it looks like an error at first sight. It would help if GitLab could be so smart and say "from" and "to" refer to the same commit
or something like that.
