Emoticon ASCII faces are distorted by markdown

>_> and ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ are both common to write in chat apps, but to make them appear properly in gitter they have to be written as \>_> and ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ which then looks off to people using IRC. Slack special cases those two strings to not use markdown rendering, it would be great if gitter could as well.
