I had an issue sending mail without postfix (Ubuntu 11.10)

    +1 Postfix is a better (and easier) alternative to sendmail.

    +1 on this. Also, the installer scripts should ensure having an existing postfix configuration, otherwise when seeding the database with sample data (default admin user) things can go wrong. (In particular when running rake db:seed_fu)

    It does not matter which MTA you have installed, just as long as it's configured properly. I don't see any reason, besides personal preference, to favour postfix of sendmail at this time.

    Closing this merge request. If you thing the default MTA should be changed to postfix or something else entirely, feel free to discuss it on the mailing list to reach consensus.

    The instructions didn't specify a proper configuration, and Gitlab couldn't send email. This is a simple change to the instructions that led to Gitlab functioning correctly.
