Expose config options

I updated @JonRowe 's PR #834 with the latest from master. To sum up, this exposes some additional accessors on the Configuration object.

I would have merged this in directly, but I know @myronmarston expressed an interest in reviewing #834 so I wanted to give him an opportunity.
