build process cleanup

I did a little cleanup so that the tree contains way less cruft that is generated at build-time. I'm strictly opposed to storing any 'derived' content in VCS, that's a mess that leads to chaos. That's actually a preparation for build-time svg-to-png conversion, stay tuned!
