Will this also get support from the omnibus package? For example via symlinks as discussed in https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-shell/merge_requests/89#note_15069217?

If given some pointers where to point the symlinks to or which configuration option to use in gitlab.rb, I can give adding this to https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/omnibus-gitlab a try.

I don't see a reason not to support it but the real question is how to do it, and who is going to do the work, and when. :) Those questions can raised on the omnibus tracker.

I've asked @smcgivern to create an issue in omnibus-gitlab to discuss this feature.

I will do! I've created https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-shell/merge_requests/113 to make the parent directory configurable first, as discussed in https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/omnibus-gitlab/issues/1754.
